How Do You Motivate People?

What's your motivation? Career Development? Money? A shiny new toy?

Seriously though, all too often organisations start projects without considering how to motivate the people delivering the work. SoftEd trainer James King has written a post about 'Expectancy Theory' which is the idea that people will only be motivated to do something if they think it will be worth doing. Whether this is the case is based on three things: can they do it, will it make a difference and will they be rewarded for it?

His post was so popular James followed it up with another post with other motivational techniques that can quite often backfire. Read more to avoid the trap!

Agile = Playing Games?

A lot of Agile coaches encourage their teams to play games but they can have very different approaches to choosing games and different opinions on what the benefit of the games are.

What qualities make a good game: procedural learning, social learning, whether they are motivational? What are the important considerations when choosing a game: what are you trying to teach through the game, when is the correct time to play a game and where is the correct place? Finally, what should a team do after they have played a game to ensure they get the most beneft from it?

The levels of testing

How do you explain testing? There are both different types of testing activities and there are different stages of testing. Taking inspiration from Boris Beizer's book, "Software Testing Techniques"  Bj Rollison talks about the model he uses to illustrate the concept of 'level of testing' in his blog.

In this example (a) Integration is a process by which components are aggregated to create larger components (b) Integration testing is specifically aimed at exposing the problems that arise from the combination of components (c) A system is a big component and (d) System testing concerns issues and behaviours that can only be exposed by testing the entire integrated system or a major part of it. Could these types of models help your business?

James Bach interview

James Bach has delivered testing courses in Australia and New Zealand with SoftEd since 2003. On his recent visit he delivered a course in Melbourne following a 17 hour overnight bus ride from Sydney after his flight was cancelled. Now that's dedication!

If you missed his recent visit (or didn't, but want to see more of James!) then watch this 8 minute interview he gives about the challenges facing software testers.

Exploratory Learning

How do you get the most out of the conferences you attend? Some of us examine the schedule cover to cover for weeks, highlighting, underlining and planning. However, if you take an 'exploratory testing' perspective to your conference planning you might find that you get a lot more out of it. If a session isn't working for you, leave and join another. Unfortunately not many of us get the chance to go to more than one conference a year, so make it work for you.

Read more from a tester who used this approach with great success, and bear it in mind when you sign up for this year's STANZ conference!
